The Character Design for Games course leads you step-by-step through the character design process. This course emphasizes the fundamentals of gesture drawing, anatomy, storytelling, and perspective. With these foundational skills, students then move onto experimenting with various body types and silhouettes to create distinct and memorable characters.

Course Overview

 

Curriculum

The Ashcan Character Design for Games course heavily emphasizes an analytical understanding of the human figure. Students will study proportion, while learning the shape and function of the human skeletal and muscular systems for both the head and full body. Gesture and movement studies will also be covered. By the end of the course, students will have developed 2-5 of their own characters.

Subjects include:

  • PROPORTION - AGE, MALE, FEMALE (SIDE, FRONT, BACK)

  • ANATOMY - MUSCLE, BONE, (SIDE, FRONT, BACK)

  • FACE 1 - EYE, NOSE, LIPS, EARS

  • FACE 2 - ANGLES, LIGHT AND SHADOW

  • GESTURE - WEIGHT AND BALANCE

  • SILHOUETTE - BODY TYPES AND SHAPES

  • CREATURE DESIGN 1 - DIFFERENT ANIMAL ANATOMICAL STUDY

  • CREATURE DESIGN 2 - MIX AND CREATION

  • CHARACTER DESIGN 1 - RESEARCH

  • CHARACTER DESIGN 2 - STRUCTURE

  • CHARACTER DESIGN 3 - COSTUME DESIGN

  • CHARACTER DESIGN 4 - MOTION STUDY

Schedule

All the courses are designed for students to be able to finish their courses in 7 classes.

One week (Aug 26th - Aug 29th) for make-up classes will be given after the regular 7-week summer schedule for students with excused absences by faculty members.
* All summer courses must be finished within 8 weeks by Aug 29th.
