The Character Design for Illustration & Comics course reviews the design process for creatures in TV and feature animation. Students begin by studying the anatomies and movements of several animals, before creating their very own creatures. This class emphasizes exaggerated shapes and proportions, as well as experimenting with gesture and facial expressions.

Course Overview

 

Curriculum

The Ashcan Character Design for Illustration & Comics course emphasizes storytelling, exaggeration, and personality in character design. Students will study exaggerated proportions and shape designs, in addition to studying different facial expressions and movement. Some classes will be dedicated to studying the character designs of several major animation studios. By the end of the course, students will have developed 2-5 of their own characters.

Subjects include:

  • INTRO TO ANATOMY

  • FACIAL STRUCTURE AND EXPRESSION

  • COSTUME DESIGN

  • MOTION STUDY

  • COLORING

Schedule

All the courses are designed for students to be able to finish their courses in 7 classes.

One week (Aug 26th - Aug 29th) for make-up classes will be given after the regular 7-week summer schedule for students with excused absences by faculty members.
* All summer courses must be finished within 8 weeks by Aug 29th.
