The Character Design course leads you step-by-step through the character creation process. This course emphasizes the fundamentals of gesture drawing, anatomy, shape design, storytelling, and perspective. With these foundational skills, students then move onto experimenting with various body types and silhouettes to develop distinct and memorable characters.

Course Overview

 

Curriculum

The Ashcan Character Design course will heavily focus on an analytical understanding of the human figure, followed by storytelling, exaggeration, facial expressions, and movement. Students will hone their foundational knowledge and skills while studying pre-existing major characters.

Subjects include:

  • INTRO TO ANATOMY

    • PROPORTION - AGE, MALE, FEMALE (SIDE, FRONT, BACK)

    • ANATOMY - MUSCLE, BONE, (SIDE, FRONT, BACK)

  • FACIAL STRUCTURE AND EXPRESSION

    • EYE, NOSE, LIPS, EARS

    • ANGLES, LIGHT AND SHADOW

    • FACIAL EXPRESSION

  • GESTURE AND SILHOUETTE

    • GESTURE - WEIGHT AND BALANCE

    • SILHOUETTE - BODY TYPES AND SHAPES

  • CREATING CHARACTER

    • RESEARCH & WRITING

    • STRUCTURE

    • COSTUME DESIGN

    • MOTION STUDY

  • CHARACTER SHEET & TURNAROUND

    • FULL BODY TURNAROUND & POSE

    • EMOTION SHEET
