Digital Character Design

 

This course covers the basic techniques and methods of character design. Students will start with basic shape language and move on to fundamental world-concept design, character personality design, moodboards, basic body language, costume design, and coloring techniques to complete a character design or gather inspirations for future projects. This course is suitable for students interested in character design, illustration, graphic design, or those needing to design original characters.

Curriculum

These classes are designed to emphasize exaggerated shapes and proportions, as well as experiment with gesture and facial expressions. The students will have an analytical understanding of the human figure, including the shape and function of the human skeletal and muscular systems for both the head and the entire body. By the end of these courses, students will have developed 2-5 of their own characters.

Subjects include:

  • PROPORTION - AGE, MALE, FEMALE (SIDE, FRONT, BACK)

  • ANATOMY - MUSCLE, BONE, (SIDE, FRONT, BACK)

  • FACE 1 - EYE, NOSE, LIPS, EARS

  • FACE 2 - ANGLES, LIGHT AND SHADOW

  • GESTURE - WEIGHT AND BALANCE

  • SILHOUETTE - BODY TYPES AND SHAPES

  • CREATURE DESIGN 1 - DIFFERENT ANIMAL ANATOMICAL STUDY

  • CREATURE DESIGN 2 - MIX AND CREATION

  • CHARACTER DESIGN 1 - RESEARCH

  • CHARACTER DESIGN 2 - STRUCTURE

  • CHARACTER DESIGN 3 - COSTUME DESIGN
